Which Cricut Machine Do You Need?

September 11th, 2010

The Cricut machines are personal electronic cutting machines.  At first glance they could be mistaken for a printer and in many ways operate like a printer.

There are several types of machines.  All are made by Provo Craft.  All are versatile machines of high quality.

There is the standard Cricut machine, the Cuttlebug, the YourStory, Cricut Cake and  Gypsy.

Let's figure out what kind of Cricut machine you need.

Here is what each of them do.

  • The standard Cricut machine can cut beautiful designs and fonts for scrapbooking, paper crafting, card making and so on.  This is a scrapbooking favorite.
  • The Cricut Cake machine is a personal electronic cutter designed specifically for decorating such things as cookies, cupcakes and well…..cake!
  • Gypsy allows you to take your complete cartridge library with you wherever you go.  Gypsy also allows you a complete system of design capabilities so that you can design wherever you are.
  • The Cuttlebug is a personal embossing and die cutting system.  It allows you to do intricate designs on paper and more.  It has dies in a number of sizes and styles.  It is capable of crisp die cuts and professional embossing anytime, anyplace.
  • Cricut Design Studio is the software that puts all of this together.  You can explore, design and cut the complete Cricut cartridge library.  You can even make your own unique designs.  You can combine cuts from different cartridges and weld, shear, flip, kern and duplicate characters.  You can then save your new designs to use later or share with a special friend.
  • Finally there is YourStory Machine which does book binding and also doubles as a laminator.

These powerful machines are all cartridge based machines.  There is an accessory called the Jukebox that attaches to any Cricut machine that allows the machine to hold up to 6 Cricut cartridges.  You can even link 3 Jukebox core units together giving you access to 18 cartridges with ease.

The list of accessories also contains numerous tools, scissors, hooks, trimmers.  You name it and Provo Craft has it.  Virtually all accessories work for all machines.

It seems that there are cartridges for just about every application.  In fact there are over 100 of them.  Some do shapes. Some do fonts.  Some have seasonal designs.  The list is huge.

Just like a printer, there are consumable items with a Cricut machine.  Depending on the machine and your project, you may need paper, vinyl, cutting mats, color inks, blades and cardstock.
