I inherited a single shot handgun and would like to know more about it. Unfortunately it has very few marking?
It's overall length is approx. 14" No trigger guard. Has the stamped on the right side of the barrel 6 M/M & the letters B, G & U each with a crown over them; also on the opposite side of the barrel the single letter 'N'. That's it for markings. It takes a cartridge, about the size of a 22 long, but looks like a miniature shotgun shell. What can you tell me about it?
Sounds like it might be a Flobert style parlor pistol. these were popular in the later 19th century up to maybe 1920 . Flobert ( pronounced Flow-bear) was the inventor of the cartridge and it came in sizes like 22 call but even up to a 9mm cartridge. They basically were indoor pistols used in the parlor by the men with their brandy and cigars while wives gathered in another room.
The target may be a stout board with a bulls-eye on it. The equivalent today would be CB caps or Aguilla ammo company makes what looks like .22 short but they have no powder. Many of the Parlor pistols were in very good shape since they were kept indoors and only used on occasion. Some could be very ornate and many were made in England and France. Many were also just poor imitations and cheaply made. Try locating pictures on line of Flobert Pistol or Parlor pistols.
Value can very from almost worthless to 4 or 5 hundred for very nice ones with silver furniture and maybe even higher. Many companies made them.
