Where should I start if I want to do some basic mechanical engineering?
There are a few projects I've been planning to work on that require some basic engineering and metal/wood-working skills and tools. Right now I'm thinking of making a small display case for brass casings of various firearm cartridges; what this requires is adjustable metal containers with small locks to keep the brass in place, among other things. I'd like to know where I can find raw materials (metals, plastics, springs) and what tools I should use to shape, cut, weld, etc. Thanks.

I'd recommend getting a book for both woodwork and metalworking, you need to really know what you're doing before you take on a project like this. None of it is hard to learn, but I wouldn't jump in blind.
