How can I carry a small personal protection knife in Europe?
My GF's family and I are going to Europe this summer and I'm worried about protecting them and myself. I know that I can have a knife in my checked luggage when leaving the states, but I don't know the laws for carrying a small knife, no more than seven inches, for countries such as England, France, Germany, Switzerland, etc. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
You are not allowed to carry a knife in France unless you need it for things like camping and such and you can prove that you are going camping. Tent, backpack... If you are found walking around with a pocket knife you will get it confiscated, if you walk around with a 7 inches blade you will visit the French police station for carrying a deadly weapon concealed. The 10 cms rule is an urban legend (word from a cop), it's just that they might not bother with a small pocket knife with a 3 cms blade to open envelopes.
You are not allowed to walk around with any kind of knife in the UK and will have it confiscated by customs if you're lucky, prison and a fine if the cops catch you in the street with it (my husband got his small pocket knife confiscated by customs who warned him about the risks).
I don't know the law for Germany and Switzerland.
If you mean a 7 inches blade, don't even try it. That's a weapon you'll be carrying, not a pocket knife, and weapons are tightly restricted in both countries. You will get arrested. Besides, you don't need it, you won't be visiting dangerous places but countries that are way less dangerous than the US. Probably the biggest danger you will run is to have your wallet lifted, or a heart attack trying to cross a main street in Paris. If you really, truly cannot live without a weapon buy a pepper spray in Europe.
