How can i paint a model kit I just bought?

A few days ago I bought an airplane model kit but I'm not sure if i have to build it and then once built i paint it or if i have to paint each piece separately, or if it doesn't matter.
I already read the instructions but it says nothing about how to paint it, so if anyone knows please answer.
Thanks!
Scale 1:72, model f-22 raptor, gears down.
I saw a video were the man who was painting the model used a brush. Can i use a brush or does it has to be an airbrush or spray?

I prefer to paint my models PRIOR to construction... particularly things that will be hard to get to when it IS built: Landing gear, wheel-wells, cockpit interior, engine, missiles, pilot figure, etc.

I DO have an airbrush, but it's a pricey object if you're just starting out.

What works is to have the BASIC colors in model spray-paint: white, black, and the aircraft color (Gunship Grey & Medium Grey for an F-22) http://www.testors.com/category/135243/American_FS_Enamel_Paint

I build the kit in "assemblies": Landing Gear, Ejection Seat, Cockpit, etc... and paint the rest of the aircraft while it's still on the sprue (the plastic tree).

DO wash the model GENTLY in warm soapy water and rinse, ALSO wash your hands before handling the model: the oils on your fingers will interfere with paint adhesion.

GOOD LUCK
