Wheel stud replacement on prelude?
I have a 97 honda prelude vtir. The previous owner put on rims that didn't fit the car well so put 2 spacers on each front wheel. So now there isn't much thread left on the stud to screw on the nut to hold the wheel on. And some of them are damaged when I went for a wheel alignment. I'm wanting to fit longer studs so I get more thread to keep the nut on. I enquired a few things but want to confirm them.
1. Is is necessary to press apart hub to fit the new studs in
2. If you press out the hub, is it required to change new bearings? as i was told they get damaged during the pressing process
Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.
That link doesn't work, i get directed to links on auto insurance
From my experience with longer wheel studs, they will some times bend or warp over time. Making it more of a hassle then what they are worth. I installed some on my old Nissan and I didn't have to take off the hubs (but then again the car had all wheel disk brakes). If you can make at least 6 full rotations on the lug nut before it stops spinning on the stud, then its safe.
How much of a offset are you trying to subtract? It would probably be better to pick up a 15mm or higher adapters. This way you don't have to replace the oem sized studs for after market ones. Plus you'd be able to resell those later if you don't want them any more versus used extended studs.
