is it hard to take off shower tiles? i have a house built in 2000 with bathroom showers all tiled in the?
standard shiny, white 4x4 tiles. I want to redo the bathroom stalls, but heard from some people that it could take forever, and that i might end up messing up the the drywall? to me it sounds simple... just get a spatula or something of the sort and scrape off the tiles... is that how it goes or is it more difficult than that?
has anyone out there done this? what tools would i need? what type of tile cutter do you suggest? i'd like to replace the tiles with something bigger... maybe 10x10 tiles?
You will not be able to get the tiles off without damaging the wall.
You'd be better off, cutting the tile out with a sawzall to save time, replacing the tile backer, and puting new tiles on. The expense isn't that much more, and you'll save alot of time doing it that way.
Secondly, placing 10x10 tile in a shower is easy, looks nice, but you need to make sure that the wall is flat. Because the tiles are so big, they are very unforgiving to even the slightest waviness in a wall. Don't let that scare you. If you use the cement tile backer, instead of the typical drywall, it will be flat enough.
The cement tile backer goes up the same way that drywall does, only uses special screws form the tile backer manufacturer.
If you can do ceramic tile yourself, you have the ability to take it one step further and do the tile backer as well. It is not difficult and will save you alot of time.
