The Basics Of Iron On Vinyl
Have you ever gone to the opening night of a blockbuster movie? If you ever have you may have noticed the people waiting outside dressed up in garb to support their favorite actor or maybe even in support of the entire movie franchise. Many of these creative outfits are custom made, you can't just run by the store and pick up this apparel. Well you can make your own special outfits for an even tlike this with your average iron and some iron on vinyl.
This iron on vinyl is specifically made for making apparel items. Ideally it is used for making t-shirts since it is suited to bond to cotton and poly-cotton blends. But you can really stick it to just about anything that can withstand the temperature of the iron to complete the bonding process.
Iron On Vinyl Comes In Many Styles.
Iron on vinyl comes in several styles. Of course the most common is your basic colors. These are all your rainbow type of colors. This style is most common and fairly self explanatory.
You also have a style that is called flocked. This is a type that has been around for a long time, but has recently gained some new popularity. Flocked vinyl is applied by the same principles as the regular iron on vinyl, but has a fuzzy velvety texture. Surely you have seen a t-shirt in the store that has used flocked vinyl to create the design.
Then you have printed vinyl. Iron on vinyl is one of the only types of vinyl available in a print. Most types of vinyl are only available in solid colors. The prints you will find most often are animal prints like zebra and camouflage.
Iron On Vinyl Application
The vinyl comes in a solid sheet or roll, so of course you need some way to make a design out of it. Ideally a Cricut or Silhouette machine is the best. These machines are capable of making professional quality designs. People would probably never know you made your own shirt if you didn't tell them. You could also use scissors or a paper punch if that's what you have.
The design cutting process is really a topic of its own and is more about the equipment being used than about the vinyl. So I am going to talk more about the actual application. There are plenty of videos on you tube and such showing how to cut vinyl and iron on vinyl.
Since the vinyl is primarily designed for application to fabric we will talk about putting it on a t-shirt. First you want to preheat your garment. This step will remove moisture and wrinkles to ensure a successful application. After preheating, set the vinyl onto the garment.
Typically iron on vinyl will apply at a temperature just over 300 degrees. This is a cotton blend setting on most irons. This is also the point where a steam iron will start to create stem, so empty out your iron if necessary. Then iron with a firm pressure for about ten to fifteen seconds. It is always best to check the manufacturer specs before you apply your vinyl.
